The Gregorius shimmers in the glass in a strong, dark chestnut brown. Ripe fruit notes dominate the nose. The initial taste presents a strong malt body, which is characterized by coffee and roasted aromas. Slightly bitter chocolate flavors accompany the warming finish of this powerful Trappist beer. Naming Father Dr. Gregor Eisvogel led the Trappists, who were expelled from their Oelenberg monastery after the First World War, to Engels-zell. Neither the high purchase costs nor the poor condition of the building deterred him. He had an enviable trust in God. Against much resistance, Father Gregor Eisvogel fought for permission to purchase Engelszell. On December 3, 1931, Father Gregorius Eisvogel was elected as the first abbot of the Trappist Monastery on the Danube. His infectious enthusiasm, enthusiasm, determination and, above all, his trust in God were instrumental in giving the monastery a new one Developed vitality.
This motto is lived out every day with beers. Natural processes take place during brewing, but also during fermentation, maturation and storage of the beer. The duration of these processes cannot always be the same and so they give the beer the time and peace it needs to develop its full flavor. Even today, you still have to be patient to get a good beer. In 2012, the current brewery was founded on the grounds of the monastery. This made Engelszell Abbey the eighth brewery to join the ranks of Trappist breweries. The number of breweries run by the Cistercians of the Strict Observance and bearing the coveted "Authentic Trappist Product" logo has now grown to 10 worldwide. (As of 2021) The three beers of the Engelszeller, Nivard, Benno and Gregorius are brewed based on the model of the Belgian Trappist breweries.
