Dark brown in color with a cappuccino-colored head, Virvatuli (Cellar Series) is brewed with natural Estonian herbs, including heather, St. John's wort, marigold, primrose, linden and elderflower, chamomile and mullein, and aged in Vermouth and Scotch barrels. Intense and complex on the nose, the aroma is characterised by hints of caramelised sugar, redcurrant jam, notes of figs and dried herbs. On the palate it is rich, toasted oak notes are well balanced with soft and sweet hints of cherry. As it warms up in the glass, nuances of caraway seeds, wild flowers and aromatic herbs can also be perceived, which make their way before giving way to notes of dried fruit and light and delicate smoky hints.
Põhjala was founded in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts and home brewers. Soon thereafter the company was joined by a Scottish head brewer, Chris Pilkington, with a few years of Brewdog experience under his belt. The first Põhjala beer, Öö Imperial Baltic Porter, was released in the beginning of 2013 and for most of that year, our beers were contract-brewed in other breweries’ production facilities while we prepared to open our own. Construction of our first brewery was completed in April 2014 in Tallinn’s Nõmme district.
