MoreMont des Cats beer is a relatively new Trappist beer, but its history goes back centuries, when the abbey of Mont des Cats was an important pilgrimage center in the Flanders region. Trappist monks began producing beer at the abbey as a way to raise funds to maintain the monastery and help the poor of the region. Beer production was interrupted during the First World War.
Mont des Cats beer is produced by the Abbey of Mont des Cats, located in northern France, near the Belgian border. This abbey is a Trappist abbey that follows the centuries-old traditions of Trappist brewing, which are produced only within the walls of the Trappist abbeys under the supervision of the monks.
The abbey of Mont des Cats was founded in the 19th century as a Benedictine monastery, but during World War I, the monks were expelled from the abbey and the abbey was completely destroyed. After the war, the monks returned to the abbey and began reconstruction. In the 1920s, the monks decided to become a Trappist abbey and began producing beer as a way to raise funds to maintain the monastery and help the poor of the region.
Mont des Cats beer is the only French Trappist beer and is produced in limited quantities due to the artisanal nature of its production.
