MoreThe Trappist abbey De Achelse Kluis, located in the province of Limburg, has been brewing beer since 1852, although its origins date back to the mid-17th century. In the beginning they brewed beer for the monks' own consumption, and with the First World War Achel beer even disappeared. It took more than 70 years for the brewing tradition to be revived in the monastery by Friar Antoine in 1989. However, it was not until 1998 that the abbey's brewery officially resumed operations, acquiring the Authentic Trappist Product label. It currently produces four varieties: Achel Blond 8, Achel Bruin 8 (which reach 8% alcohol) and their extra versions with 9.5% alcohol content, respectively.
In 2021, the Trappist logo was removed because there are no monks in the monastery to supervise the brewing of their beer, although production remains faithful to the quality of their beers.
