Brewing beer is a centuries-old tradition at the Appelhoek site in Melle. The first traces of brewing activity here date back to 1654. In 1904, Léon Huyghe started working in the local brewery. In 1925, his son Albert and son-in-law Louis Droesbeque joined Léon Huyghe in the brewery and the brewery was officially renamed Brewery L. Huyghe. Today, Alain De Laet, the fourth generation of Huyghe, stirs the brewing pots. The little elephant born in 1989 has become an international icon.
