In 1981, De Halve Maan brewery, whose foundation dates back to 1856, brewed a special top-fermented beer after the unveiling of a statue of Saint Arnold, the patron saint of brewers, in Bruges. The beer was named "Straffe Hendrik", after the different generations of Henri Maes who ran the brewery, and was so successful that it continued production. However, the Straffe Hendrik brand and commercial background were acquired in 1988 by Brewery Riva of Dentergem. Production in Bruges was reduced considerably, finally ending in 2002 and continuing in Dentergem. Due to the bankruptcy of Liefmans Breweries of Dentergem in 2007, the Brugse Straffe Hendrik beer brand temporarily became the property of Duvel-Moortgat. In 2008, De Halve Maan signed a purchase agreement with Duvel-Moortgat for the brand. Halve Maan began brewing Straffe Hendrik again as it was originally made: a 9% tripel. Liefmans had made Straffe Hendrik a blonde and brown version of 6 and 8.5% respectively
