Traquair House although not strictly a castle, is a fortified mansion said to be one of the oldest inhabited houses in Scotland.
MoreTraquair House although not strictly a castle, is a fortified mansion said to be one of the oldest inhabited houses in Scotland. It is located 11 kilometers south of Peebles. The Traquair House brewery is located in one of the wings of the house, below the Chapel. This brewery originates from the early 1700s and originally only served drink exclusively to the house. Brewing was discontinued there around 1800, but it was never dismantled. Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960s and began brewing again in 1965. He used all the original equipment and fermented the beers in the original oak fermenters, some of which were over 200 years old. Sandy Hunter of Belhaven Brewery and together they researched the Traquair archives and developed the recipe for a traditional Scottish Ale. The first brew was made in 1965 and the final product was bottled in Belhaven and sold in Traquair.
