Brewing beer is a centuries-old tradition in the Appelhoek area of Melle, Belgium, with a local tradition dating back to the 17th century. Starting in 1902, Léon Huyghe took his first steps in the local brewery, and in the following years modernized the old company, until a proud pink elephant was born.

In 1925 Léon Huyghe was supported by his son Albert and son-in-law Louis, and the brewery was officially renamed Brouwerij L. Huyghe. Today, Alain de Laet, 4th generation of the Huyghe family, is at the head of the brewery. The little elephant has become an imposing Flemish mastodon.
