Hoegaarden Le Fruit Defendu, also known as Hoegaarden Forbidden Fruit or Forbidden Fruit, is a dark Belgian top-fermented beer with secondary fermentation in bottle. It belongs to the Dark Ale style and is brewed with roasted malt, hops and spices such as coriander. Its label is inspired by a Rubens painting and depicts Adam and Eve enjoying glasses of beer. This beer is produced by De Kluis, founded in 1965 by Pierre Celis, a renowned brewmaster. Hoegaarden Witbier, rescued by Celis, is a white wheat beer that became very popular. Hoegaarden Le Fruit Defendu offers a mahogany color, dense and creamy foam, sweet aroma of malt and spices, and a balanced flavor with hints of vanilla, chocolate, fruit and coffee. It has an alcohol content of 8.5%. Enjoy this exceptionally tasty beer and discover its rich brewing history.
According to Googarden archives, wheat beer has been produced in this area since 1318 and has been particularly popular since two monasteries were founded in Googarden in the 15th century. During World War II, the Belgian brewery suffered German plunder. Around 1955, Tomsin Brewery, the last of the Googarden breweries to produce wheat beer, closed. About ten years later, dairyman Selis decided to try to restore this production and founded a new brewery in his hayloft.
