Since 2012, Uiltje (which means "little owl" in Dutch) has been brewing some of the most interesting and quirky IPAs and beers in the Netherlands. The small brewery in the historic brewing town of Haarlem, just outside Amsterdam, was part of the first wave of bold, American-style hoppy IPAs in the Netherlands and Europe. Uncompromising beers, individual artwork and absurd stories have made Uiltje one of the most famous and celebrated beer brands in the country. Uiltje's beers and artwork are so limited that almost all cans are collector's editions.

Holland's best beer.

In a way, Uiltje started as a celebration and a protest. A celebration of fruity hops from the West Coast of the United States, a protest against mindlessly produced lagers and pilsners. The brewery quickly gained a reputation for mischief and mayhem: they threw whole Christmas trees into their cauldrons and played Johnny Cash songs 24 hours a day while their beer aged in kegs. They took hop culture to the extreme in every way, including the pop culture names of their beers. Uiltje, a fanatical contributor to like-minded breweries around the world, found himself at the forefront of innovation and ambition, gaining a huge following that helped grow the company. Mischief still drives much of Uiltje's diverse output, which is based on IPAs and barrel-aged ales, but now also includes blondes, sours and wheat beers. Today, after hundreds of awards and millions of fans, Uiltje is still passionately dedicated to quality hops, custom creation and.... fun.

Hop Incubator

In the back of the Uiltje brewery is a lab dedicated exclusively to hops. Before brewing a new beer, the brand meticulously searches for the best hops. If they can't find it, the beer will not be brewed. Last year they refused to release one of their most popular archive beers, Mosaic Mammoth, because the hop quality simply wasn't right. In addition to staples like Citra, Mosaic, Cascade and Simcoe, the brewery regularly collaborates with leading and unknown hop farms in the U.S., Europe and Oceania to test new, as-yet-unnamed varieties in Europe. How much does Uiltje care about hop quality? The company's founder named his dog after a German hop commonly used in IPAs: Saaz. With the company's own hop incubator, nothing is left to chance.
