MoreThe origin of this "Grand Imperial Beer" can be traced back to a brewery founded by a community of Beguines in a hospital. In 1433 the brewery was taken over by Mathijs in den Anker, son of the famous Mechelen brewmaster Jan in den Anker.
An old chronicle says that his beers were mainly consumed during fox hunts and were enjoyed by the inhabitants of Mechelen as well as by Emperor Charles I. In 1872, Louis Van Breedam and his sister bought the original building and founded a brewery. In 1904 the brewery changed its name to Het Anker. After the Second World War the brewery started to produce the "Emperor's beer", renamed "Golden Carolus" in 1960 in honor of Emperor Charles I.
In 1990, a three-star hotel was opened inside the brewery. In 2010 Het Anker started producing Gouden Carolus Single Malt in collaboration with the former family distillery Stokerij De Molenberg in Blaasveld. Today, the brewery has a worldwide reputation and exports its products to more than 40 countries.
