Ode to Wine

why do you sell your wine, merchant?
What can they give you in exchange for your wine?
Money? ... And what can money give you?
Power? ... Aren't you the owner of the world
when you hold a glass in your hands?
Wealth? ... Is there anyone richer than you,
that in your glass you have gold, rubies, pearls and dreams?
love? ... Don't you feel the blood burning in your veins
when the cup kisses your lips?
aren't the kisses of wine as sweet as the most ardent kisses of the hurí?
Well, if you have everything in wine, tell me merchant:
why do you sell it?

Poet, because by making my wine reach everyone,
I give power, riches, dreams, love...;
because when you hold your beloved in your arms,
you remember me;
because when you wish happiness to your friend,
you raise your cup;
because when God blessed the water he transformed it into wine,
and when he blessed the wine he transformed it into blood...
If I offer you my wine, poet... Don't call me merchant!
