William Magner began making the world's finest Irish cider in Dowd's Lane, Clonmel, with a cider press and a dozen oak barrels. Magner's cider making was so successful that it soon began to grow and grow, providing work for many of the town's inhabitants. Soon William's cider became so popular that he sought additional help so he could expand his business even further. H.P Bulmer of Hereford, England, were large cider producers looking to expand into Ireland, so William Magner joined forces with H.P Bulmers. This joint venture meant that Magner could produce and sell Bulmers Woodpecker Cider in Ireland (avoiding high import duties) and thus finance the production and distribution of William's own sparkling cider in bottles. The Magners-Bulmers partnership flourished and, as a result, William Magner sold his cider in Ireland under the Bulmers trademark. But as time passed, the two cider producers went their separate ways. It was agreed that William could continue to sell his great tasting cider in Ireland under the Bulmers name. However, by 1999, William's Bulmers cider had become so popular that his dedicated successors wanted to share it worldwide. However, W.M. Magners Ltd could not use the Bulmers name outside of Ireland, so they used William's name instead, which is why it is called Magners Original Irish Cider outside of Ireland.
