It was brewed at Ireland's oldest brewery, St. Francis Abbey Brewery since 1710, until its closure in 2013, and is currently brewed at St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin.

The ingredients are water, malted barley, roasted malted barley, hops and yeast. Its alcohol by volume rate is 4.3°/l. It is available on draught and in cans.

Although of Irish origin, it is particularly popular in Canada in the Irish pubs of Toronto (where celebrities such as Mike Myers, Drake and Robert Gates have been seen holding a Kilkenny) and in Australia (where it can be found in most pubs).
