"Schlenkern" is an old German expression for walking crooked (like a drunk person). One of the previous brewers had a funny way of walking due to an accident (or maybe due to the beer), and so they called him the "Schlenkerla" (the ending of the word in "la", is very typical in the Franconian dialect).

Later, the residents of Bamberg also called the tavern "Schlenkerla", and although the sixth generation of brewers now slightly knocks the beer, it has continued to keep the name. Even in the phone book and on the Internet you can find the brewery under the name "Schlenkerla". This name today stands for tavern, brewery and, most importantly possibly, smoked beer.
