Hoegaarden Grand Cru Belgian beer is a top-fermented beer brewed by the Hoegaarden brewery, which was founded in 1445 in the town of Hoegaarden, in the Flanders region of Belgium. Hoegaarden Grand Cru was launched in 1985 as a limited edition beer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the brewery after a temporary closure. Due to its great success in the market, the brewery decided to continue producing it and today it is one of the brand's most renowned beers.
According to Googarden archives, wheat beer has been produced in this area since 1318 and has been particularly popular since two monasteries were founded in Googarden in the 15th century. During World War II, the Belgian brewery suffered German plunder. Around 1955, Tomsin Brewery, the last of the Googarden breweries to produce wheat beer, closed. About ten years later, dairyman Selis decided to try to restore this production and founded a new brewery in his hayloft.
